Africa in space: four countries lead the pack

Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa are the only African countries that appear to have developed a space exploration and development policy, according to an article in South Africa's Engineering News. This article also reports that, of the six African-owned and operated satellites in orbit around the earth (three earth observation satellites and three communications satellites), not one is South African: three are Egyptian, two are Nigerian, and one Algerian.
