Harvard warns Ugandan colleges over name-poaching

Leading United States educational institution Harvard University has told local schools in Uganda that it regards the unauthorised use of the name "Harvard" as an infringement of its trade mark rights. According to AllAfrica.com, Ugandan education institutions known to be using the name are Harvard College School (Kamwokya), and Harvard College (Hoima) and Harvard High (Idudi, Iganga). It is not yet known what action is being taken at the level of either ligitation or administrative relief, or whether the schools propose to defend their use of the Harvard name.

For University Institutions (and other brand owners) this highlights the importance of registering translations of their names to protect them.
