Of the 15 candidates announced by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in the forthcoming competition to be appointed Director General, only one is from Africa. He is James Otieno Odek (Kenya). Professor Odek, currently Managing Director of the Kenya Industrial Property Institute and Chairman of the Paris Union, read for his doctorate at the University of Toronto, where he wrote a critical review of the function of patent law in Kenya.
